As the new Federal deadline for signing up for health insurance fast approaches, many Americans are enrolling for the first time.

Whether you have had health insurance through an employer, through Medicare or are new to health insurance, this eight-part blog series, pulled from our Be a Prepared Patient resources, has information to help you understand how to pay for your care, how to interact with your doctor’s office and what preventive care you might need, much of which is provided free under the Affordable Care Act (visit this page from NPR for more FAQs on the Affordable Care Act).

Shopping for health care is very different from shopping for other services or products. Unlike buying a new washing machine or having cable installed, it can be difficult to find out ahead of time how much a health care procedure or test will cost you. Even your physician can be in the dark about this all-important consideration.

The price of health care services also varies throughout the country, and different insurance companies may negotiate different prices with providers and health care organizations.

For help figuring out what you may have to pay for certain medical treatments, check out our How Much Will Your Health Care Cost? resources and tips.

I am so glad that I now have health insurance cover for me and my family. I now know it will come in handy in the future if any one of us becomes ill. And it just gives me piece of mind that all medical costs will be covered.
