7 No. 6 This past year has seen a flurry of congressional interest in the inner workings of the National Institutes of Health -- much of it related to unwelcome news like conflict of interest scandals and meddling in peer review. But as you’ll read below, NIH and Congress are both asking some of the necessary questions to re-evaluate NIH’s core mission: Are we spending federal dollars in the right places? Do we have a public research structure that funds translation as well as discovery? Do our current goals match the changing landscape of illness in the 21st century? If these questions can stimulate a real debate about better health for all Americans, that would be welcome news indeed. Hope your summer is off to a great start. Cheers -- Jessie Gruman, Ph.D. |
