SPOTLIGHT ON RESOURCES

Curious about how your colleagues are getting out the message about prevention? This month’s spotlight falls on a new Web site from HHS’s Office of Disease Prevention and Promotion that catalogs some of the less known or distributed efforts in prevention communication. The Prevention Communication Research Database is a database of “audience research” conducted by or funded by HHS agencies. The database can be searched by health topics, including arthritis, cancer, tobacco use and healthy eating and nutrition, with topics like asthma and youth violence and injury still in the works. Site visitors can also search by the gender, race, age, education, income and geographic location of the prevention’s intended audience. Each database file contains an abstract and downloadable PDF of the full report if available, as well as contact information for the sponsoring HHS office.

HHS employees are also encouraged to contribute new reports electronically to the growing site. Reports already published in journals or edited volumes are not eligible for the site, since its creators hope to focus on smaller and lesser-known prevention programs.

Chewfree.com is a randomized clinical trial on the Web testing a cessation program for smokeless tobacco users. Program participants are randomly assigned to visit either an “interactive” or “basic” form of the site, which includes forums, a resource list and links to other cessation information. The interactive site also contains a “Personal Quitting Assistant” that asks questions about the quitting experience via a video guide. Interactive site participants also receive personal messages based on their quit status when they log in. Basic site participants have the option to switch to the interactive site after a six-month assessment, according to ChewFree.com’s project coordinator, Laura Akers.

You can check out both sides of the site by registering as a guest at http://www.chewfree.com. The program was created by the Oregon Research Institute and sponsored by the National Cancer Institute.
