Washington Update

* On May 27, Surgeon General Richard Carmona released a new report on the widespread health consequences of smoking. The report details smoking’s effects on diseases throughout the body, including stomach, cervical and kidney cancer. * According to a June 1 report in the business news weekly Modern Healthcare, Reps. Jim Greenwood, R-Pa., and Patrick Kennedy, D-R.I., are forming a congressional caucus on technology use in the health care industry. Reps. Charlie Norwood, R-Ga., and Anna Eshoo, D-Calif., have signed on as co-chairs of the 21st Century Health Care Caucus.

* At a May 24 conference on obesity and the environment, HHS Secretary Tommy Thompson said businesses should do more to encourage workplace exercise and insurance companies should give a rate break similar to the one for non-smokers to people who make healthy lifestyle changes in their diet and exercise. * Most Americans and Canadians report good or excellent health, but low-income Americans are more likely to say they are in poor health than their Canadian counterparts, according to a study released June 2. The survey, called the Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health (JCUSH) was conducted jointly by Statistics Canada and the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics. To read more, go here.

* The National Institutes of Health has revamped its public health portal to include more interactive features and new sections on healthy lifestyles and cutting-edge research. Check out the new look at http://health.nih.gov/.

* Mark Willenbring, M.D., joined the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism as the director of the institute's Division of Treatment and Recovery Research on June 14. Willenbring comes to NIAAA from the University of Minnesota and Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center in Minneapolis.
