SPOTLIGHT ON RESOURCES
Like all relatively new fields,
evidence-based health has its share of buzzwords and terms -- including “evidence-based” --
with evolving definitions. This month’s spotlight focuses on
a short glossary published recently in the Journal of Epidemiology
and Community
Health that attempts to define some of the most popular concepts in evidence-based
medicine. Compiled by Lucie Rychetnik of the University of Sydney, Australia
and colleagues, the short glossary runs through the types of evidence
associated with evidence-based public health, the link between argument
and sound evidence and the most commonly used types of evaluation in
evidence-based health research. Need a short definition of “systematic
reviews”? Struggling with a concise explanation of the logic of
evidence-based interventions for a grant proposal? The glossary lays
out these issues and others in a few concise paragraphs. You can get
to the PDF version of the article here. *** On June 24, the National Library of Medicine launched its American Indian Health Web portal, a compilation of links aimed especially at health issues affecting more than 4 million United States residents with American Indian or Alaskan Native ancestry. The site contains links to Web pages for 29 different tribes, links to health topics that commonly affect American Indians, information on traditional healing and environmental health, ongoing research projects involving the American Indian community and links to pages about health care access across governmental agencies. Tribes can submit their Web pages to NLM to include on the portal here. NLM also has a variety of other specialized pages for Asian Americans, Americans living in the Arctic, Spanish-speaking Americans and senior citizens.
