THE LESSONS OF TRANSLATION: COMMONWEALTH FUND REPORT

Although “translating research into practice” is a health care mantra, translation success stories are still hard to come by, according to a July report by the Commonwealth Fund. The report presents eight “lessons” for improving translation gleaned from four case studies of evidence-based innovations in health care. Strong management support, persuasive data in support of the change and coordination across agencies is key, says the report’s lead author, Elizabeth Bradley, Ph.D., of the Yale University School of Medicine.

Successful translation also requires infrastructure, including staff, funds and materials, specifically allocated to the translation effort from the beginning, according to the report. The translation infrastructure should be closely related to the organization adopting the innovation, and senior management must be committed to making the change, the report adds.

Outside “threats” to an organization also speed up the translation process, Bradley and colleagues found. In the case studies examined for the report, regulatory compliance was one of the more significant forces exerted on the organizations that caused them to quickly adopt evidence-based practices.
