SPOTLIGHT ON RESOURCES

Psst…want an insider’s look at how your NIH grant application is being reviewed? This month’s Spotlight falls on a unique video produced by NIH’s Center for Scientific Review that hopes to demystify NIH’s study section meetings and the grant review process. The 39-minute video features real reviewers and NIH staff members discussing real applications for an R01 research project grant, a K08 career development grant and an R03 small innovative grant. Along with a clear outline of the main criteria used by the study sections to review grants, the video provides an interesting look at the give-and-take discussions among reviewers.

The video concludes with a list of helpful hints that may improve your application’s chances during review. And if your application doesn’t succeed at first? The Center for Scientific Review asks applicants to take a deep breath, scrutinize the critiques of their application and remember that persistence is key.

The video, along with accompanying documents such as the original grant applications and program announcements, can be downloaded in several different formats here. The Web site also lists a mailing address to write to for CD copies of the video.
