Obituary: Dr. Helen Rodriguez-Trias

HABIT and the Center for the Advancement of Health are sad to note the death of Dr. Helen Rodriguez-Trias, a nationally recognized advocate for health, on Dec. 27, 2001.

A pediatrician with expertise in maternal and family health, Rodriguez-Trias assumed many influential roles -- including that of the first Latina president of the American Public Health Association. She was awarded a Presidential Citizen's Medal in January 2001, in recognition of her work on behalf of women, children, AIDS patients and the poor.

A statement from the Los Angeles Times' obituary is representative of the many testimonials to Rodriguez-Trias' compassionate power. "She was a wonderful, sensitive pediatrician who worked tirelessly with poor children," said Judy Norsigian of the Boston Women's Health Book Collective, where Rodriguez-Trias served as a member of the advisory board. "But she was also an astute policy person. She understood what was needed and was able to reach all sorts of people. Just a wonderful advocate."

Dedicated to raising the next generation of advocates for health, Rodriguez-Trias served on CFAH's Scholars in Health Disparities National Advisory Committee.
