New Reimbursement Codes Recognize Behavior-Health Link
Several years of interaction between the American Psychological Association's Practice Directorate and the American Medical Association have led to AMA's adoption of six new reimbursement codes for psychological services to patients with physical health diagnoses.
The new codes, which became effective Jan. 1, cover behavioral, social and psychophysiological procedures for the prevention, treatment or management of physical health problems. Unlike virtually all other codes currently in place, they permit reimbursement for treatment by a psychologist without the need for a mental health diagnosis.
As APA's proposal for the codes explains, delivery of services designated by the new codes will focus not on mental health, but on the biopsychosocial factors important to physical health problems and treatments.
On one level, the new codes reflect growing recognition of behavioral determinants of health at all points in the wellness continuum. On another level, the codes will greatly enhance the ability of psychologists to support health-promoting behaviors for a wider range of clients.
