TRANS-NIH INITIATIVE TO ADDRESS RACE/ETHNIC DISPARITIES IN DIABETES COMPLICATIONS

"Health, United States, 2002" is only one of many recent reports to document a distressing rise in diabetes and its complications, and to reveal that minority populations are disproportionately affected.

In light of these reports, and of recent large-scale studies that underscore the efficacy of intensive management in reducing the vascular complications of both type 1 and type 2 diabetes, five NIH institutes have issued a new program announcement.

The objective of PA-02-165 is to understand racial and ethnic disparities in the development of micro- and macrovascular complications of diabetes: nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

In recognition of the probable interplay of biologic and non-biologic factors, the PA notes opportunities for the investigation of environmental factors, including behavior and lifestyle, that may contribute to risk for development and progression of these complications.

The new PA, which replaces PAS-00-028, will continue until Feb. 1, 2006, with three application cycles each year. The sponsoring institutes -- NIDDK, NINDS, NEI, NINR and NHLBI -- encourage applications from investigators new to diabetes and digestive and kidney diseases.
