HABIT

October 22, 2002 Vol. 5 No. 8

Dear Colleagues,

In his October 9 testimony before the House Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services and Education, Dr. Elias Zerhouni, Director of the NIH, spoke about the nation's investment in medical research. He touched on the NIH's role in translating research into policy and practice, social and behavioral determinants of health, research on risk behaviors and decision-making, and the role of milestones and missions at the NIH -- as well as answering the usual questions about what the Institutes' growing budget will buy the taxpayer in terms of improved health.

While the NIH director has limited sway over the operation of the individual institutes, it is nonetheless an interesting collection of observations and commitments.

For an overview of Dr. Zerhouni's ideas, take a look at his prepared testimony.

Regards --

Executive Director, Center for the Advancement of Health
