SPOTLIGHT ON RESOURCES
Sticking to a treatment,
whether pharmaceutical or behavioral, is one of the most essential,
yet most difficult, challenges faced by patients
and their providers. Lack of adherence to therapeutic regimes leads to
poorer health and costs individuals, businesses and the government millions
of dollars each year, yet very little is known about why people can’t
or won’t do what they need to make themselves well. This month’s spotlight falls on a new NIH site that tackles the problem of adherence. The site’s aim, says Ronald Abeles, Ph.D, of the Office of Behavioral and Social Sciences Research, is to encourage adherence research and boost awareness of NIH’s adherence studies. The site includes information on members in the NIH Adherence Research Network, meeting and funding updates, data sets from previous adherence research, a bibliography and information on policies that may affect adherence work, such as the latest HIPAA standards. At the moment, the site consists mostly of links to other parts of the NIH Web that relate to adherence, but will include more specific content as the site develops. You can suggest topics or other services for the site by e-mailing Abeles at abeles@nih.gov. To visit the site, go to here. |
