Vol. 6 No. 5

Dear Colleagues,

Even as the Bush administration is about to launch a $15 billion commitment to fight HIV/AIDS internationally, it’s still having some trouble deciding how to fight this epidemic at home (see story below). This foray by HHS into preventive health is a worthy initiative but it must not shirk from its mission of delivering science-based information that can improve the health of millions of Americans.

Government-sponsored research over the past 50 years has produced a body of evidence on how diseases like AIDS develop and spread — and how they disappear when prevented and treated properly. Support for those discoveries came directly from the pockets of taxpayers, and we ought to make full use of the knowledge we have paid for.

Cheers --
