NIAID SURVEY: MANY THINK AIDS VACCINE SECRETLY EXISTS

According to recent surveys conducted by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, 20 percent of Americans think that an HIV/AIDS vaccine exists and is being kept a secret.

Even higher percentages of blacks (48 percent) and Hispanics (28 percent) believe there is a secret AIDS vaccine. These minority populations were also the strongest supporters of HIV vaccine research, however, with 96 percent of blacks and 94 percent of Hispanics saying that vaccine research was “extremely” or “very” important.

A third of the 3,500 people surveyed also believe that test vaccines can cause HIV infections in clinical trial volunteers. Another 44 percent of the survey participants were unsure about the possibility of volunteer infections.

NIAID Director Anthony S. Fauci, M.D., says that the institute is planning educational efforts “to help correct misconceptions” about ongoing HIV vaccine research, especially in light of the need for future vaccine testing volunteers.

NIAID will complete its full analysis of the survey by late summer 2003. To read more about the survey and NIH’s AIDS research, go to here.
