Washington, DC -- The Center
for the Advancment of Health has been awarded a $198,402 grant from the W.K.
Kellogg Foundation to establish three congressional health policy fellowships.
The fellowships are named
in honor of H. Jack Geiger, a scholar and activist devoted to the problems
of health, poverty and human rights.
Under the program, Fellows will be selected for six-to-12-month stints in
congressional offices to research and develop policy in areas including:
HIV/AIDS, health
professions training, health disparity federal initiatives, health care coverage
or community health centers.
The Geiger Fellows will
be selected from among the current or former participants in the Kellogg-supported
Scholars in Health Disparities program -- also operated
by the Center for the Advancement of Health -- the Kellogg-supported Health
Policy Fellows and the Community Health Scholars programs.
The Center for the Advancement
of Health is an independent nonprofit organization funded by foundations
to help people make decisions about their health and
health care by translating evidence of how psychological, social, behavioral,
economic and environmental factors influence health and illness.
The W.K. Kellogg Foundation
is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to apply knowledge to solve
the problems of people. Its founder W.K. Kellogg,
the cereal industry pioneer, established the Foundation in 1930. Since its
beginning the Foundation has continuously focused on building the capacity
of individuals, communities, and institutions to solve their own problems.
