MENTORSHIP

The Congressional Tri-Caucus has a well-developed staff support network. This network will be used to ensure the Fellows will have an expansive and in-depth congressional experience, learning about public policy development while playing a role in it and researching the public process as a participant.

This network will play an important part of the Geiger Fellows’ mentorship roles by providing introductory seminars and hosting political guidance discussions to accompany Congressional orientation workshops during the first two months of placement. In the second month following the fellowship start date, with the advice of the Congressional and CFAH program staff, each fellow will be matched with a congressional mentor to aid them in thinking through their plans and outcomes during their fellowship. Mentors will typically include someone associated with the Fellow's anticipated congressional work.

In addition, the Congressional Fellows will be of significant benefit to their mentors, the Caucus and the congressional health staff generally, with their interpretations of current research that have implications for policy and legislation. Fellows will do summary reviews of the data and state of knowledge – and gaps – in relevant domains, and assist in framing legislation aimed at meeting key needs of training of minority fellows working with community-based organizations on health-related issues.
